Pickleball
What is Pickleball?
Pickleball is a fun racket sport that combines elements of badminton and tennis. The sport uses a hard paddle and a polymer wiffle ball. It is primarily played as doubles. Pickleball was developed in 1965 in Seattle; it has become very popular in many southern and western states, and is spreading across the country. It is a social game, as play is only to 11 points, so players can rotate quickly in and out of games.
Pickleball appears to be very similar to tennis; there are key differences that make it more accessible to all ages, including children and seniors. Foremost among these differences is the speed of the ball which moves slower than the average speed of a tennis ball. Equally important is the size of the court which is just under one-third of the total area of a tennis court. This smaller area combined with the slower moving ball makes Pickleball easier to learn and play than tennis. However, experienced players will have a very fast paced net game which gives a great workout.
